Appell

Sergio Servellón, the museum’s director, invited the German artist Suse Weber to develop a joint exhibition project. This synergy has led to a unique concept ‘tailored’ to the specific museum environment and fitting within the international context of contemporary visual arts.

Artistic liberty

APPELL is based on the experiences of the difficulties young contemporary artists have in being picked up and selected by institutions and curators. Factors such as network and reputation often play a decisive role in the selection by exhibition makers. Often, risks are avoided and new, unknown names are rejected. Based on these observations, Sergio Servellón and Suse Weber developed a concept of presentation in which artistic freedom is the standard.

Chessboard

The diversity in the works of the participating artists is considered the starting point, in other words, no thematic criteria are imposed, nor is the choice of material or medium restricted. The only restriction is the format of the work. The artists are asked to operate within a surface area with the following dimensions: 9 x 1.6 x 1.6m, where the first number is the height. Each artist will be given the same surface area. The result is a succession of works positioned next to each other like pieces on a chessboard. Because of the arrangement of the works within a square, the visitor will have to approach the exhibited works in a specific way. The architecture of the museum means that the entire exhibition can be viewed from above, giving the viewer an overview, as it were, of an imaginary landscape of artworks. The exhibition APPELL clearly breaks with the traditional approach to contemporary art and opens up a new access to an environment in which both the artists and the recipients must find a new orientation.
